From eternal power couple, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah to the late unyielding “Tiger of Jelutong” Karpal Singh, Malaysian alumni of the National University of Singapore (and the institutions that have preceded it) have been busy changing the landscapes of Malaysia and the world at large, since the early 20th century. Even after Singapore gained independence in 1965, the fates of Malaysia and Singapore are still closely intertwined, with NUS having no shortage of Malaysian students since then.
However, there was no official body representing Malaysian students in NUS, with Malaysians often having to make the journey to Singapore from Malaysia alone and without much help. Realising this, in 2004 a group of 5 Malaysians decided to help the incoming batch of Malaysian students by organising the first University Freshmen Outreach, or more affectionately known as UFO, for a group of 4 Malaysian freshmen. A few years later, the Malaysian Students’ League (MSL) was born. Fast forward from our humble beginnings, our NUS MSL now aims to create a “Home Away from Home” for Malaysian students studying in NUS, where the Malaysian spirit burns gloriously.
Singapore might be far away from home for some of us Malaysians, but with the right people around us, we can call anywhere home 😀. Come join us!
To incoming freshmen, do check out our resources to aid in your application to NUS and our hostels, and feel free to reach out to us if you have any queries.
