The most popular bank account services used by NUS students are :

  • DBS & POSB (they are different banks under the same management, their services provided can be used interchangably)
  • OCBC

Applying for Bank Account

Foreigner (Studying in Singapore)

  1. Identification Document
    • Provide Passport with at least 6 months of validity (biodata page)
    • For Malaysian – Provide front and back of Malaysian IC
  2. Proof of Study in Singapore
    Provide any of the items below:
    • Matriculation card/ Student card (includes In-Principle Approval by ICA)
    • Letter from school (restricted to official letters from educational institutions or schools under the purview of Council for Private Education or Ministry of Education)
  3. Proof of Residential Address
    Provide the latest copy (within last 3 months) of any of the items below:
    • Local utility bill
    • Local telecommunication bill
    • Local bank statement/credit card statement
    • *Letter issued by government of other public bodies regulated for AML practices in a FATF member country
    • *Letter from regulated insurance companies in a FATF member country
    • Letter from school (restricted to official letters from educational institutions or schools under the purview of Council for Private Education or Ministry of Education)
  4. *Overseas residential address is acceptable (as applicable).

Note:

  • For online account application, please ensure that the photo/scanned copy of the document you wish to upload as the proof of residential address clearly shows the address and the issue date.
  • Applications will be rejected if the Name, Passport/ Malaysia IC number and Residential Address listed on your application form differ from the provided copies of items above.
  • You can request for Proof of Residence from your hostel’s office after you check in

E-wallet

Almost every store in NUS provides e-wallet services including canteens. It is the main mode of payment for the students here. You can also use it to pay each other among friends.

DBS and OCBC offer their own e-wallet services:

You can’t go wrong with any of them but Paylah! is the more popular option. Other services like Grabpay or Alipay are also available but at limited number of locations.

Payment of Tuition Fee

The tuition fee is paid a few weeks after the semester begins. You can either pay it at Office of Students’ Affairs (OSA) counter at Yusof Ishak House (YIH) or GIRO.
